Why Is This Important?

Deputy sheriff pens series to decrease fear during safety training while increasing trust of law enforcement in the schools.

Children’s book publisher, Flowerpot Press, has partnered with Tennessee native Becky Coyle to release a three-book series in October. A deputy sheriff and school resource officer in Williamson County, Coyle has penned Police in Our School, The Lockdown Drill and Who Let The Dog In? to lessen fear among children about safety rules and training for emergencies in the schools — a difficult subject that should be carefully handled.

In a post-Sandy Hook world, school children from a very young age partake in safety rules or training beyond what their parents might have experienced — say, regular tornado or fire drills. As more tragedies have occurred in schools, increased safety precautions and drills have been put into place. But, that does not mean young children clearly understand what they need to do, according to Coyle, or why a police officer may now be found roaming the halls of their school in the role of resource officer.

“Law enforcement officials are in schools to help keep children safe and to be a friend that they can trust. Sometimes the only experiences that these children have with police officers are in their most terrifying moments — perhaps a car accident or when a family member was arrested,” Coyle said. “Police In Our School was written to help establish our role in their school environment and ease their fears about what we do and what we care about, using a fun picture book format.”

The other two books in the series tell the story of safe emergency practices to young children in a non-threatening manner (The Lockdown Drill), and reinforce the importance of not letting strangers into the school — even if that stranger is just a furry puppy (Who Let the Dog In?).

“The goal is to build positive relationships with our little ones — so that when they are older and facing more difficult situations and peer pressure, they already have a foundation of trust with law enforcement. Hopefully, that trust will lead to more positive choices all the way around,” she said.

Synopses of each book:

Police in Our School

A school resource officer has a diverse role in the school community and has many duties and responsibilities. Police In Our School tells a story about the important role their school resource officers play to protect them and their school. Becky Coyle learned firsthand how children can misunderstand officer's roles in schools through her work as an elementary school resource officer. It inspired her to create this school safety series to explain school safety concepts to young children in a fun and engaging way, all while teaching police identification.

The Lockdown Drill

The Lockdown Drill teaches students the importance of listening to their teacher and school resource officer during important school drills. Using fun characters and engaging rhymes, The Lockdown Drill demonstrates safe drill practices to young children in a non-threatening manner. In her work as an elementary school resource officer, Becky Coyle learned firsthand how misinformation can affect student performance during emergency procedures and was inspired to create this School Safety series to open conversation and demonstrate school safety to young children in a fun and engaging way.

Who Let the Dog In?

A crucial lesson is delivered in this gentle tale about the importance of not letting strangers into the school — even if that stranger is just a furry puppy! Author Becky Coyle learned firsthand how a child's trusting innocence can put them in danger in her role as an elementary school resource officer, and she was inspired to create this school safety series to open conversation and demonstrate school safety to young children in a fun and engaging way.

“I am very proud of the way these books turned out. Kids should enjoy being kids in an environment where fear is never an issue,” Coyle said. “It is our job to figure out how to train children without compromising that innocence, and I think these books will help us do just that!”
